GBF was the pioneer of rural ICT development in Nigeria. Before the advent of GSM services in Nigeria, GBF was in 2000 selected by the NCC and the USAID Leland Initiative to work with the US based National Telecommunications Cooperative Association (NTCA) in the assessment process leading to the development of a strategic plan for sustainably empowering rural communities with access to ICTs.
GBF identified and selected the communities that were visited across 14 states in Nigeria.
GBF went further with NCC to develop a rural telecoms module to empower rural women in line with its objective of promoting sustainable economic development leveraging ICTs, thereby promoting universal access.
